Watching a documentary about the Spice Girls reminded me of my own unique journey in the 90's. I started working on a mining site in South Africa. This was in a time when it was illegal for a women to work Underground in South Africa. So why did I do it? The answer is simple. I had no idea what I was getting into and a metallic dark green Golf Gti 16V. I received a car subsidy and could afford my beautiful beast.

The only other women were the GM's Secretary. So there was no female change houses in the operations, I got my own locked cubicle. The change house was swept and cleared before I used it and my trusted male colleagues would keep "cavy" to prevent any awkwardness.

Learning 1: Make it work for you with the help of others whatever the circumstances.

I was only "allowed" to drive the company bus after the monthly site parties. On those trips back to Machadodorp my responsible driving would be applauded. The next morning when I did the pick up, the Mechanical Foreman would declare he will not be driven by a woman. Suited me fine as we then used the inhabitable forrest roads that were tough navigate and I preferred to be a passenger.

Learning 2: Pick your battles

It was different times in the 90s. Well known and respected organisations would issue girly calendars for Christmas. I was not sure how to handle it, While having coffee in the office with the "new arrival" against the wall. I took a black marker and covered the offending bits with a calm smile while declaring that I was not going to look at her exposed body for the whole year. The following year my co-workers requested to have wild life images on their calendars without me being involved in any way. They showed respect and care that I cherish to this day.

Learning 3: Do not ignore it - Do not be the Aggressor nor the Drama Queen

There is no denying that there was tough times. What I did learn however is that nothing or nobody, apart from yourself, can hold you back. Although women have more support these days they are still responsible and accountable for their own success.

Learning 4: You are the Success others aspire to - Do not give up
